Located at 310, Jln Parameswara, Kampung Bandar Hilir, this hidden gem has been delighting locals and visitors alike with its flavorful take on traditional Peranakan cuisine. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a regular, this restaurant offers a dining experience that's both satisfying and memorable.

Walking into Restoran Baba Ang, you're greeted by a welcoming atmosphere that blends modern touches with traditional Malaysian warmth. The restaurant itself has a simple yet cozy vibe, which makes it an ideal spot for both family gatherings and casual meals. The interior is clean and bright, with a mix of contemporary furnishings and vintage décor that adds character to the space. It’s the kind of place where you can relax and enjoy your meal without feeling rushed, which is always a plus.

The menu at Restoran Baba Ang is a true reflection of its Peranakan heritage, serving up an array of flavorful dishes that showcase the rich culinary traditions of the Straits Chinese community. Peranakan cuisine, also known as Nyonya cuisine, is known for its bold flavors, intricate seasoning, and harmonious mix of Chinese and Malay influences. The restaurant does an exceptional job at bringing these elements together.

One standout dish is their signature Nyonya Laksa. It's the perfect balance of spicy, tangy, and creamy. The noodles are served in a rich, coconut-based broth, flavored with a perfect blend of spices that will make you want to take another spoonful. Another must-try is their Ayam Pongteh, a savory braised chicken dish that's been slow-cooked with potatoes, soy sauce, and a combination of spices. It’s comforting and rich in flavor, and it pairs perfectly with a bowl of steaming rice. These two dishes alone are enough to make Restoran Baba Ang a go-to spot for anyone seeking authentic local flavors.

But it doesn’t stop there. The restaurant also offers a variety of other traditional dishes such as Sambal Belacan, Otak-Otak, and Nasi Ulam, all of which are infused with the distinct blend of spices and herbs that make Peranakan cuisine so special. The careful attention to detail in every dish demonstrates the expertise that has been passed down through generations of the Baba Nyonya community.

Service at Restoran Baba Ang is another aspect that sets it apart. The staff are friendly, attentive, and always happy to make recommendations based on your tastes. If you're unsure about what to order, don't hesitate to ask them for their personal favorites or any daily specials-they’re always happy to share their knowledge. The owners, who are deeply involved in the day-to-day operations, often take the time to greet customers, making the experience feel more personal.

What’s also noteworthy is that the restaurant offers a variety of options to cater to different dietary preferences. Whether you're a vegetarian or a meat lover, there’s something for everyone on the menu. This makes it an excellent choice for groups with diverse tastes, ensuring that no one leaves hungry.

Reviews of Restoran Baba Ang consistently praise the quality of food and the warm hospitality. Many visitors remark on the authenticity of the dishes, with some saying it’s the best Nyonya cuisine they’ve tasted outside of Penang. Others are drawn to the cozy atmosphere, which allows for a relaxed dining experience that’s hard to find in more commercialized eateries. The affordable pricing also adds to the appeal, making it a great value for the quality of food on offer.

What’s more, Restoran Baba Ang is conveniently located near the historical heart of Melaka, making it an excellent choice for tourists who want to experience the local cuisine while exploring the area. Its central location means that after a hearty meal, you can easily walk around the nearby landmarks, such as the iconic St. Paul’s Hill or the famous Dutch Square.

In a city filled with dining options, Restoran Baba Ang stands out for its ability to stay true to its roots while providing a welcoming atmosphere and excellent service. If you're in the mood for an unforgettable meal, this is definitely a place to add to your list. From the flavorful dishes to the genuine hospitality, every visit promises a memorable experience that will leave you coming back for more.

  • Can be crowded during peak hours. They only accept reservations for 4 persons and above. Food is delicious. Assam prawn is very good. Chendol is great. Babi pongteh has lot of onion in the gravy. Mutton curry is very fragrant and spicy.

  • I loved everything here, very authentic and delicious nyonya dishes!! My favourites: ayam goreng berlada, pineapple curry shrimp, and pongteh. The cendol is also probably the best one I’ve tasted so far. The food is served very slowly though, and most of the staff don’t really understand English/Malay (?). Still, I want to come back and try more dishes for sure.

  • My 1st time here after seeing lots of good reviews. True enough food was good. Pricey though. We order 5 dishes and 3 bowls of chendol and bill came to about rm270. Nice ambiance in a old house belonging to the owners. Ample parking at the rear. As you enter the restaurant it looks like they are closed. Reservation is a must as they have limited seating and capacity to cope with orders. Their rice dumplings / nyonya or bak Chang are also delicious.

  • Awesome Peranakan food in Melaka. The cosy restaurant was very busy when we were there on a Monday evening. A walk-in was turned away as they were full. Food took more than 30 mins to be served. We very much enjoyed the dishes (especially rendang chicken and chap chye) - wished we were in a bigger group. Parking’s available onsite.

  • We had a bit of a hard time getting to Baba Ang due to some communication delays — their replies on WhatsApp were rather slow. Nonetheless, we’re very thankful that they were able to accommodate us at the last minute. Once we were there, the food arrived quite quickly, perhaps because we were among the last to order. I have to say, the food was GREAT! We ordered several dishes: sotong, prawn, chicken, ladies’ fingers, and egg. My personal favourites were the sotong sambal and the nanas lemak prawn — the prawn dish was absolutely divine. We really ate to our hearts’ content. The chicken had quite a few bones, but that’s a matter of personal preference. To end the evening, I tried the chendol, even though I’m usually not a big fan, and it was superb! It had a unique taste that I really enjoyed. While some may find the prices a bit high, I think the quality and flavour make it worth it. Despite the initial difficulty getting there, the experience was totally worth it. I would definitely recommend Baba Ang to others and will absolutely return when I’m in Melaka again.

  • As far as food and service goes, Baba Ang is a 5-star experience. I can't speak to it's authenticity (I'm not Peranakan myself) but I can attest to the flavor. We ordered the pongteh dish, asam pedas and telor cincalok. While it may seem like a travesty that we didn't order the chendol (we aren't fans), the food was absolutely delicious. The pongteh offered a sweeter, thick gravy flavor and the asam pedas was great, (more asam, less pedas), as it was not as spicy as some other restaurants like to make it. It was also not as oily as we thought it'd be which is great. Telur was a nice addition with the two above with the rice to top it all off. Great experience, and we appreciate that the place was air-conditioned. Food was reasonably priced and the portions were very generous. (They will reduce the portion size and price accordingly depending on the number of diners so don't worry) DO message the friendly folk at Baba Ang for a reservation as this place can get pretty popular. We also like that the restaurant was situated in a home, added to that "home-cooked" feel. Don't be afraid to bring friends who are afraid of spice here. It won't kill them.

  • Visited Melaka last weekend with my wife’s family and finally tried Baba Ang after hearing so much about it. We tried to reserve for either Saturday or Sunday, but were only lucky to get a table on Sunday at 11 am. When we arrived, the staff greeted us warmly, but it took a little while to find our reservation slip due to the busy crowd. Luckily, a friend recommended a dish not on the menu, which we pre-ordered—once we mentioned it, the owner quickly found our reservation, and we were promptly seated. We ordered three main dishes, including the pre-order dish: Rendang Chicken, Ikan Chili Garam, and Bak Goreng Tauge (pork with fermented red bean curd). Portions were generous—enough for 5–6 people depending on how many dishes you order. The Rendang Chicken was fantastic—the santan (coconut milk) was fresh and fragrant, creamy but light, and the chicken was moist with a lovely aftertaste. The Bak Goreng Tauge had a subtle fermented red bean curd flavor that complemented the pork perfectly. The pre-order dish was the highlight—fresh, juicy, and bursting with flavor. The Ikan Chili Garam was fried just right, with fresh fish and a fresh chili mix that added just the right amount of kick without being too spicy. We also tried their Cendol, which reminded us a lot of Auntie Koh’s version. The santan was smooth and fresh, though here the gula melaka was stronger and red bean was added, giving it a richer twist. There are still one or two more pre-order dishes not on the menu that we’re excited to try next time. Overall, a fantastic meal! I’d highly recommend making a reservation—weekday, weekend, or public holiday—as getting a table by walking in can be quite tricky.
